If you did not complete high school, do not have the grades required to take the post-secondary program you want, or have been out of school for a long time, our high school courses may be for you. Our programs provide a variety of learning options to match your needs. We offer traditional classroom instruction or more flexibly scheduled learning. You can study at our campus locations or at home through an online option. On campus, you can take courses during the day or in the evening.

• Transcripts for high school courses successfully completed in Canada within the last five years
OR:
• Obtain a high school level on the BVC Admissions Placement Test

High School – Traditional

The Traditional Program offers a full complement of courses throughout the day in regularly scheduled classes from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In addition to regular contact with instructors, students in this program can access tutors in Math, Science, English and Social Studies.

High School – MaxPace

MaxPace is a flexible High School program that offers several advantages and is a successful option for students who are ready to learn more independently. MaxPace is open during the day Monday to Thursday and students can take high school courses at times that suit their schedule. Instructors and education assistants guide students through their courses and provide a learning approach that is a combination of independent learning and one-on-one assistance and support.

This learning option provides the following advantages to students:

• Individualized teaching, assistance and support from instructors and education assistants
• Flexible scheduling
• Independent pace of learning
• Course progress plans keep students on track and help them compete successfully
• Access to computers and technology
• The opportunity of completing courses more quickly
• The possibility of taking two courses for the price of one – and get there faster!

Materials, supplies, and textbook costs for high school courses apply if you need a high school credit course, our self-paced, multi-level evening program may be your answer. Classes are held two evenings per week from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Room 525, North (Main) Campus.

Registration: Brief interview with instructor is required to confirm readiness for course. Interviews are conducted at the classroom between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on the evenings the class is in session (see above). No appointment necessary.

High School – Online

A wide range of Alberta Education credit courses are offered through either the online or homestudy options. These courses allow you to study at your own pace from your home, overseas, while working or travelling, or wherever you happen to be. All required course examinations must be written at a Bow Valley College Campus or at an approved alternate location.

With the online option, instructors and tutors provide support through telephone, email, and other online support features. Online courses include course guides, online practice tests, hand-outs, and additional resources to help you succeed. A course calendar helps you pace yourself through the course. You may proceed as quickly as you can. Instructors and tutors provide support through telephone and email.

High School Exam Challenge

Challenge any High School final exam (non-diploma) for High School Credits. Grade 10 or 11 only. Exam challenges for the same course may
only be attempted twice.

High School Equivalency (GED) Exams

The GED exams are a way to obtain an Alberta Education High School Equivalency Diploma. Additional upgrading of high school courses may be required for students entering some post-secondary programs. Five subject areas are tested on the GED exams: Language Arts (Writing), Language Arts (Reading), Social Studies, Science and Math. These exams are written over a two-day period: Fri. evening and all day Sat.

The Language Arts – Writing Exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and an essay.

The Language Arts – Reading Exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions.

The Social Studies Exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions.

The Science Exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions.

The Math Exam The Math Exam consists of two individual Math exams: Math – Part I and Math – Part II. The Math exam – Part I allows the use of calculators that we supply. You cannot bring your own calculator to the exam. The Math exam – Part II does not allow the use of calculators. Each part has 25 questions, some of which are multiple-choice, some of which require an exact numerical answer and some of which need to be answered on
a coordinate plane grid.


GED exams are not marked on percentage, but rather on standard score. In order to earn a GED diploma, a standard score of 450 is needed on
each exam. GED exams are held monthly (except for July and August) and are written at Bow Valley College Marlborough Campus.

Please note that you will need to bring only your picture ID to the exams and nothing else. Cellular telephones are not permitted in the GED test
rooms..

Registration requirements:

• You must be an Alberta resident, 18 years of age or older, and have been out of school for at least 10 consecutive months.

High School equivalency – GED Preparation – full -time

This program prepares students to successfully write the GED Exams through one full-time term of study taking three courses: GED Prep Reading Science & Social, GED Prep Writing and GED Prep Math. Students receive daily classroom instruction to develop the skills needed to maximize their score on the GED exams.
(Note: Students can register in Math for GED separately, but must register in both Reading for GED and Writing for GED concurrently.)

High School Equivalency – GED Preparation Courses – Evenings

Many colleges and employers accept the General Educational Development (GED) diploma as equivalent to a high school diploma. We provide you with the skills to challenge GED exams. This three evening a week course gives you a solid foundation in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Reading and Writing skills. While you are enrolled, register to take the GED exam, which consists of tests in each of the five subjects. Passing all five exams gives you a GED diploma.

High School equivalency – GED Preparation Course – online

Take your GED preparation course online through eCampus Alberta. This course prepares students to write the battery of GED exams. Students have access to interactive learning activities, practice tests, and instructor support.
