100% OF BOW VALLEY COLLEGE PRACTICAL NURSE GRADUATES ARE EMPLOYED IN HEALTH CARE!
Practical Nurses are an integral part of the Alberta health care team. As members of a self regulating profession they use knowledge and skill to assess, interpret and develop client care, perform a wide variety of prescribed medical treatments and advocate for safe, comfortable environments and care for their clients. Our Practical Nurse program educates you to provide high-quality nursing in acute care hospitals, longterm care facilities and in the community. Practical Nurses work in the areas of acute care hospitals, medical surgical care,
pediatrics, maternity, mental health, long-term care facilities and community.
If you don’t have the time to devote to full-time studies, the Part-Time Practical Nurse Diploma Program is for you. This Diploma is offered over two and a half years and is designed for individuals who are currently employed in a flexible work environment. The delivery format includes home study, online, classroom and lab study, peer study groups and clinical work experience in a variety of health care settings. You are required to come to class approximately five days/evenings a month for class and lab courses, and full-time for three 6-7 week clinical courses.
Instruction is provided in classroom and nursing skills laboratory settings, plus clinical experience in a variety of care settings including urban and rural hospitals, continuing care facilities, community and other health-related institutions.
Note: Every effort is made to accommodate students in clinical placements within the time frame of the program. Students may be required to complete clinical placements during evening and weekend hours and may also need to travel to alternative locations. In rare instances, the College may need to delay the date of completion until a clinical placement can be arranged. Under no circumstances are students allowed to participate in clinical placements without submission of a current valid immunization report on admission, current CPR Health Care Provider Level certificate (updated every year) and a Current Police Information Check (PIC) (updated every six months). Alberta Health Services requires students to have a valid Police Information Check completed before starting, and throughout the duration of the clinical. Students are responsible for ensuring these documents are current throughout the program. The existence of a criminal record may prevent clinical placement, program completion, or professional licensure and therefore, may affect employment opportunities.
