Health Care Aide Certificate (Full-Time)

Achieve a Bow Valley College/Government of Alberta Health Care Aide Certificate using the updated HCA provincial curriculum. This program involves a combination of delivery modes including classroom, lab, Blackboard-based online learning and clinical instruction. Learn the important core skills needed to care for clients in the health care field. Topics include personal care, assisting with mobility and feeding needs, communication, medication delivery and clinical skills.
 
Clinical experience in long-term care, acute care and community/homecare settings.

One hundred per cent of our graduates find work in the health care field.

Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

• Credit in either English 10-1 or 10-2 or equivalent
OR:
• Successful completion of the General Equivalency Development test (GED) with a standard score of 450 in Language Arts: Reading and Writing
OR:
• Satisfactory results on the BVC Admissions Test
Pre-Program Requirements

The criteria listed below must be completed prior to the first day of classes:

• A current valid immunization report required and must be approved by BVC Health Services
• Current Police Information Check (PIC)

Note: Students who have not submitted their documents by the start of the program may have their Letter of Admission withdrawn.

Applicants are requested to review the requirements listed below and assess their ability in regard to the demands of the occupation of a Health Care Aide employee:

• work shifts and weekends
• be on their feet for extended periods of time
• use their knees, back, and arms to move clients who have minimal body strength
• function effectively in stressful situations
• perform all skills independently

 

English Language Proficiency Requirement
Applicants whose first language is NOT English must demonstrate ONE of the following:

• Achievement of a valid TOEFL score of 527 - 530 on the paper-based test or a score of 71 on the internet-based test (iBT)
• Achievement of a valid Academic IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with an overall band score of 5.5
• Complete the Bow Valley College EAP program with a grade of “B”
• Transcripts demonstrating successful completion of three years of full-time secondary education at a school where English was the language of instruction
• Transcripts demonstrating successful completion of one year of full-time post-secondary education at a school where English was the language of instruction
• Where applicable, a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) standard as determined by the Career program
• Successful completion of an Alberta Education English Language Arts (ELA) course that is consistent with the specified academic admission requirements for the program
• Satisfactory results on the BVC Admissions test

International students please note: academic, additional admission, pre-program, and English language proficiency requirements must be met for entrance into this program.
